Bee Vision Exhibit at the N.Y. Botanical Gardens

What's this?

This exhibit is designed to let humans see as a bee does. Bees can see into the ultra-violet (UV) frequencies, which humans cannot. Flowers that are pollinated by bees reflect UV to attract bees. The pattern of the UV reflection creates a "bulls eye" pattern to help the bee zero in on the center of the flower.

This installation consists of a giant fiberglass flower and a giant bee's head. Inside the bee's head is a color video camera pointed at the flower. A video monitor shows the camera image with an addition of the normally invisible UV information seen only by insects.
